Distances Smaller Than This Are Not Confirmed

Co-Created by
David Neumann & Marcella Murray

With Performances by:

Hyung Seok Jeon, Marcella Murray, and David Neumann

Distances Smaller is currently in development

and will have its world premiere in January 2020,

co-commissioned and co-presented by

Abrons Arts Center and The Chocolate Factory.

In Distances Smaller Than This Are Not Confirmed co-creators David Neumann and Marcella Murray inhabit the questions “How can a white person and a Black person talk constructively about race? Will a conversation about race between a Black person and a white person always be inherently imbalanced - always? What might we be able to see on the other side of complicated and scary?”

Marcella Murray and David Neumann bring their several-years-long ongoing dialogue to the stage, setting it inside a public television talk show, and alongside astronomical questions of scale and time. Mirroring the current societal conversation, in all its hubris, fuckups, and wonders, Marcella and David weave personal stories in amongst historical events, scientific uncertainties, live video refuting ideas of scale, and periodic mesmerizing dances. Over-simplification is resisted. Imperfection is a given.
